With or without the NHIS card, you get free primary health care: Mahama for Ghanaians

Former President John Dramani Mahama, has explained his promise to offer Ghanaians free primary care should he win the 2020 general election.

The former president says the next NDC government will implement free primary health care for all Ghanaians with or without an NHIS card under a special arrangement that will be administered by the National Health Insurance Authority.

This, according to him, is to increase financial access to health services in the country.

John Mahama, who spoke in Wa at a Durbar of Chiefs as part of his 4-day tour of the Upper West region, believed that the new initiative will complement the existing National Health Insurance Plan (NHIS) to ensure that citizens access free primary health care even without NHIS cards.

“The goal of all countries is to achieve what we call universal health care. Unfortunately, our National Health Insurance Plan makes it difficult for us to achieve this goal because paying premiums at the lower end of the health service delivery system makes it difficult for everyone to access quality health care. So we are breaking a new program to complement the NHIS ”.

He added: “Let me point out that this program and plan that we are bringing will be implemented and supervised by the NHIS But it will be a free primary care program so that at the CHPS complex, polyclinics and health centers, all Ghanaians will have access to free health care, whether or not they have a national health insurance card. ”
