Georginio Wijnaldum insists Liverpool have yet to show that they are back to their championship best.

The reigning champions have overcome their recent slump in form with back-to-back victories at Tottenham and West Ham to climb to third place in the table.

Wijnaldum marked his 200th Premier League appearance with the third goal at London Stadium after Mohamed Salah’s double, the second of which was a spectacular counterattack.

The Reds are now four points behind leader Manchester City, who will travel to Anfield on Sunday.

Dutch midfielder Wijnaldum told the club’s website: ‘I don’t want to say that we are back because I think you have to show it in every match again. That is what we have to do.

“We just have to keep playing as we scored the second goal and try to do it in every game. Of course, all games are difficult, but when there is a chance to create an opportunity like this, we must.

“I think it is very bad to think that we are back because each game is another situation, another game and another rival. We have to do it again. I think we see it that way and we just try to play the games with confidence.

‘I don’t think we should think of that as leading or chasing. We just have to watch it game by game, give everything game by game and then we will see where we will be at the end of the season. I think that’s where the focus should be right now. ‘

Craig Dawson found late consolation for West Ham, which remains fifth despite seeing its six-game winning streak come to an end.

Captain Declan Rice said: ‘We all knew the opportunity it was for us to go out and put in a performance, knowing Liverpool’s recent form and knowing the way we’ve been playing, so not getting the win was really disappointing.

“But they are champions for a reason and they don’t become bad players overnight.”
