Georginio Wijnaldum has admitted that Liverpool’s newest player Diogo Jota has been ‘even better than we thought’ as he prepares to take on ex-club Wolves on Sunday.
The Portuguese striker is off to a spectacular start to his Anfield career having scored nine goals in his first 15 appearances in all competitions and has already become an important component of Jurgen Klopp’s team.
Jota moved northwest in the summer after sealing a £ 41 million move from the Wolves, and Wijnaldum admitted that he is an even better player than his teammates thought he was when he was still at the Midlands club.
“I think he will be very happy to play against his old team,” the Dutch midfielder told Liverpool’s official website.
I’m always happy when I play Newcastle because that’s my only other team. [in the Premier League].
For him, I think it’s different because he played more seasons for Wolves than I did for Newcastle. For him, I think it is much bigger than what I have with Newcastle. It is going to be a really important game for him and also a game that he will enjoy.
‘I’m really impressed because I already knew how good he was, but now I can see that he’s even better than we think of him.
“Now we train with him, we play games with him, so we can really see what kind of player he is, what kind of quality player he is. I think he has shown it with the start he has had at the club. ‘
Jota was expected to be a useful endorsement for Liverpool’s three established forwards after signing, but his displays and absences have seen him force his way into the first team image.
Jota looks forward to continuing his run of form against his former team after scoring in his last two Premier League games in a win and draw against Leicester and Brighton respectively.
The Reds hope that a win will keep them at the top of the table, with the Merseyside club tied on points with Tottenham at the top.
