On Monday, September 21, 2020, Ghanaians around the world celebrated the birthday of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of the Republic of Ghana.

The celebration took a global turn when German Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund took to their official Twitter page to join the Ghanaians in celebrating their hero.

The German side in a tweet said: “Happy #KwameNkrumahMemorialDay to all our friends and family in Ghana!”

Despite the enthusiasm of the outside world to join in the celebration of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for the third time in a row, was silent as the country celebrated Nkrumah Day, since taking office in 2017.

This year’s silence caught the attention of several people, as the government that held a ‘party’ for JB Danquah and a memorial service for African Americans George Floyd and ‘Black Panther star’ Chadwick Boseman did not find Nkrumah worthy of not even a mention on the president’s official social media pages.

Dr. Kobby Mensah, Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, in a tweet criticized the government for failing to honor Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s memory with at least one post on social media.

“Pres. Rawlings, Kufuor, Atta-Mills and Mahama celebrated Dr. Nkrumah’s birthday during his tenure. It is 10 in the morning and I have yet to readjust the Presidency line. If nothing at all, he’s our first president, isn’t he? There was a full party for JB’s birthday. Hmm! “he tweeted.

It should be recalled that the government of Ghana, in collaboration with the Diaspora Community, organized a commemorative ceremony on Friday, June 6, in honor of the African-American George Floyd, who was shot and killed by a white policeman.

The ceremony held at the historic WEB Du Bois Pan-African Culture Memorial Center was sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Barbara Oteng-Gyasi, who was at the ceremony, said: “We would like to take this occasion to draw attention to the injustice that continues to be committed against our brothers and sisters around the world.” said the Minister of Tourism, Art and Culture Barbara Oteng-Gyasi.

“Racism in America remains a deadly pandemic, for which for more than 400 years, our brothers and sisters in America have longed for a cure,” he said.

Again, on Wednesday September 9, 2020, the Ghana Tourism Authority, together with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and the Diaspora community in Ghana, held a ceremony honoring the “Panther Star Black, “Chadwick Boseman, who recently passed away after fighting the colon. Cancer.

Ghana Tourism Authority Executive Director Akwasi Agyeman said: “May I respectfully request that we all stand up for a minute of silence … for our ancestors who went through the torture journey of slavery, two , for our brothers and sisters who have fallen in In recent times especially our brother Chadwick of Black Panther fame and yesterday in Cape Coast, Elolo Gabin for those of whom have been in emancipation and panafest, you already know that Elolo no longer exists ” .

Although this government move was strongly criticized by many Ghanaians, including Kwame A Plus, who is sympathetic to the ruling New Patriotic Party, others felt that it is good that the government is showing the diaspora community that the county cares about them.

However, it was surprising that the government could not organize a similar ceremony to honor the memory of Dr. Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah when the entire country was celebrating the African hero on his 111th birthday.

This government action continues to increase the perception by some Ghanaians and political actors that the administration led by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo wants to downplay the role of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah during Ghana’s independence struggles.
