Why were some names missing from the voter registry; now over 17 million

The Election Commission has revealed that the number of registered voters is now 17,007,726.

This, according to the Commission, remains provisional until after the October 1 registration exercise.

The Commission had previously said it had registered some 16.9 million voters.

However, at Monday’s press conference, EC President Ms. Jean Mensa said that 44,420 additional names had been added and that there was still a shortfall of some 7,515 names.

Omission

During last week’s exhibition exercise, there were complaints of some names missing from the registry.

Explaining, Ms. Mensa said that there was a faulty transmission of the data from the USB sticks to the central registry after the general registry exercise.

“In some cases, in the process of exporting data from USB sticks to the central register, we experienced some faulty transmissions and this led to data shortages in some of the areas. It is important to note that although the registration process is IT driven, there is a significant amount of human involvement that can result in errors every step of the way from registration to display. “

“Simply put, our technology performed optimally as expected. However, in some areas the human element fell short, which caused some gaps in the data that we experienced during the exhibition exercise, ”he explained.

Troubleshooting

According to Ms Mensa, the EC IT department had used a technical process called “End of Life” to restore names that were missing from the registry.

He explained that the process involved transferring data into the biometric registration kits that were used during registration on flash drives.

“We have successfully recovered and continue to recover valid applicants that were missing from the provisional record,” he said.

Citing cases in Ashaiman and other areas where some names were missing from the registry, Ms. Mensa said those names were being restored through the listing process.

“In the case of Ashaiman, we have a deficit of 165 people and we expect these people to go through the registry through the inclusion process,” he said.

Successful exercise

Ms. Mensa described the voter exposure exercise as successful.

According to her, 7,969,887 people verified their data during the 10-day provisional voting exercise.

The number constitutes 46.9% of the total number of voters in the provisional census.
