Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was looking to ‘change the dynamics of the game’ when he introduced Luke Shaw during Manchester United’s win over Everton in the Carabao Cup.
United booked their spot in the final four of the competition on Wednesday night thanks to the latest goals from Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial.
Both goals came after left-back Shaw replaced Alex Telles in the 85th minute of the game in a substitution that surprised United as they sought a winner.
Despite also having Fred and Jesse Lingard on the bench, Solskjaer turned to the 25-year-old as he sought to inspire his side to a late winner.
Shaw’s introduction had the desired effect as United scored twice in eight minutes to win the match and Solskjaer explained why he made the switch.
“You never know what will happen in football, the first goal always changes games. As long as we were in the game, I knew that my substitutes could come in and make an impact,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports. “Even Luke [Shaw] when he came in he has the strength and power to drive around the side, so we tried to change the dynamics of the game a bit.

“Very good start the first 20-25 minutes we were excellent and we should have been two or three goals up. They made some good saves and then they had a good run just before the break but the last 20 minutes or so we played well.
“He was cautious at times, back and forth and fluid, attacking and defending, but you’re always confident if he opens up a bit with the pace that we have.
“[Edinson] Cavani should have scored three in the first half, but he’s a great striker, movement, quality and the goal was excellent. “
