Liberian President George Weah has revealed in a church sermon that he receives a barrage of insults via text messages from people claiming to be supporters of his party and who are angry that he is not helping them.

The 54-year-old former soccer player is nearing the middle of his term and some complain that his government has failed to create the job opportunities Weah had promised when he ran for president.

In a sermon transcribed by the FrontPage Africa newspaper, the president is quoted as telling the faithful that for every 1,000 messages he receives, 999 are insults.

The president declared that he will not offer help or assistance to people who continuously disrespect him through text messages.

“You are arrogant and you are asking me for something small; I will not do it. You cannot ask for help and disrespect the president, ”Mr. Weah is quoted.

He targeted young people aged 19-20 who wish to live alone rather than stay with their parents.

“Do you know that I was 18 years old sleeping on the floor? Why are you rushing life? I ask.

The president was raised by his grandmother in a poor neighborhood in the capital, Monrovia, from where he rose to stardom and became one of the greatest African footballers of all time, winning the FIFA Player of the Year title in 1995.

He said that young people should think about starting a business and not living alone.

“Some of you tell me to pay your rent; you get your ma and pa and you ask me to pay your rent; “Why can’t you go live with your mom. The money you want to pay your rent [with]; you can use it with your mother to do business. ”
