Volta Regional Minister Dr. Archibald Letsa says the country’s security forces were aware of a series of attacks planned by the Western Togo Restoration Front (WTRF), the separatist group seeking secession from Ghana. .

According to him, this separatist group, along with 2 others, have been under the radar of the Volta Regional Security Council since 2017.

It revealed that the nation’s security forces had pre-empted Friday morning’s attack by securing vital facilities in the group’s region, and the blockades on the Mepe-Sege highway and the Accra-Ho highway in Juapong were suspected to have been engineered. as a distraction to keep the security forces away from those places.

“We have been monitoring them for some time for more than two years, 2017. We knew there was going to be some activity last night and we had to protect some vital facility to make sure the region’s economy was not negatively affected. So we were able to prevent some more serious attacks that were planned by this group. “

Dr. Letsa further revealed that the WTRF is one of three other secessionist groups in the Volta region that have emerged from the West Togoland Study Group (WTSG) headed by Papavi.

However, the WTRF, led by Tobgbe Yesu I, is more militant than the West Togoland Study Group.

“They started with the West Togoland Study Group, but since then we have had some separate groups developing. And the West Togoland Study Group was led by Papavi. But this Restoration group is being led by Togbe Yesu I. And there is another group; so we have 3 dissident groups that we are dealing with now.

“But they all come from the same group, but there are some differences between them. This group [Western Togoland Restoration Group] it seems to be more militant than the previous one and we have been trying to deal with them as such, “he said.

Although for security reasons the minister could not go into specific details about the operations of these groups, he revealed that before the incident on Friday some members of this group had been detained and were in police custody, while others were being processed. in the tribunals.

“If you can recall, there have been several arrests and trials. As I speak to you right now, there are many of them in custody and they are being tried in the Circuit Court in Ho and some are also being tried in Accra, ”he said.

Currently, the secessionists have been repressed and detained after a shootout with the military. They have been transported to the capital, Accra, to be questioned and investigated by the Office of National Intelligence (BNI).
