The Level 3 Biosafety Laboratory in the Department of Veterinary Services of the Western Region will begin to analyze the samples of COVID-19 from Monday, May 4.
The lab will begin testing 300 samples a day before increasing to more than 500.
“… this test center has biosafety level 3 and biosafety level 2 laboratories that the WHO requires for testing. As we speak, we are ready to start testing today. [May 4, 2020]. The staff has already been trained. All logistics has been provided by Noguchi. Currently, we are going to start testing 300 samples a day. And as time goes by, we will increase the number, ”said the Head of the West Region Veterinary Services Department of the Laboratory, Dr. Theophilus Odoom.
According to him, a total of 11 people are ready to start the tests and will run a shift system so that they can work efficiently.
“All the samples will come from the Public Health Laboratory of the region. We have 11 people ready for work. We will try to run the turn. We have a team to sort, group, run and also for data management, which is also important. “
He added: “The nation and the regional health directorate are constantly working to ensure that there is always the PPE necessary for our work. For example, the regional director said they will use their medical store to support us. Therefore, we are sure that we will not break when we start working. The regional coordinating council led by the regional minister has also been very instrumental in getting resources for this place. “
New cases
Western Region Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah revealed that the Region has registered four new cases from four different districts, bringing the number of cases to 13.
“We have a case in Agona Nkwanta [in Ahanta West Municipal Assembly], one in Effia Kwesimentstim Municipal, one in Mpohor district and one in Ellembelle district. And as I keep saying, the virus is with us, so we must find innovative ways to handle it. One of the luckiest things I’ve noticed is that most of our cases are imported, so it’s our responsibility to make sure it doesn’t spread to communities. “
He encouraged residents to make their personal safety their top priority in these “difficult times for you and your loved ones to be at risk.”
“For us, we are doing everything we can to get ahead of the virus, which means we have to do more tests to quickly isolate any case and treatment. The medical team is ready to help us in that direction. What remains now is that we all be careful what we do. So we will continue to emphasize that we all strictly adhere to security protocols. ”
Donation
In response to calls from the Western Region Department of Veterinary Services to obtain support for the two testing labs, the Western Western Region Chamber of Chiefs, together with its counterpart from the Western North, presented a check for GH ¢ 40,000 to regional agricultural services.
The vice president of the Western Region House of Chiefs and the Supreme Chief of Nzema Awulae of the East Amihere Kpanynili III pleaded with people who still doubt the existence of the virus to look at what is happening around the world and reconsider.
“We don’t have a way to stop the virus right now, but we can all help people who are working on finding ways to stop the virus to work without any hindrance.” It is true that some people still deny themselves, but if you listen and observe what is happening around the world, you will realize that this virus is not a joke. Therefore, all actions presented by the President and the medical team must be followed. I don’t think any Nana or Boss is comfortable wearing a mask, but it has become necessary. Therefore, we must all do what is required of us to help prevent the spread of the virus. “
The Western Region Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Jacob Mahama, applauded the two chambers of regional chiefs for the financial support, noting that it will help put the laboratory in a good position for its intended work.
“This help has come at an opportune time when we are about to start testing here. There are many things that nationals cannot provide us. And so the support of the House of Chiefs will go a long way in making our job easier. This is because we are long overdue and we will take all of this and make sure everything is done. ”
The Laboratory awaits another shipment, for testing, from Global Affairs, Canada, which has been very instrumental in providing resources.
