Members of the West Mamprusi Municipal Assembly in the northeast region have called for a division of the Walewale constituency into three distinct parliamentary districts.
According to members of the Assembly, dividing the current constituency into would facilitate development planning and resource allocation would be efficient.
At a press conference in Walewale, Assembly Speaker Sebiyam Ibrahim said that the sheer size of the land, coupled with the increase in population, has made governance activities practically challenging.
He also added that it has created political disillusionment among members of most communities who feel they have been neglected and cut off from political participation.
Therefore, Mr. Ibrahim, on behalf of the Assembly, appealed to President Akufo-Addo and the President of the Electoral Commission, Ms. Jean Mensa, to pay considerable attention to the demand.
“Dividing the current constituency into three will make development planning easier and will also make grassroots involvement in local government very effective. With the recent EC registration, the numbers have exceeded what a constituency should ideally have, “he explained.
In expressing their support for the appeal, Assembly members emphasized the vast nature of the constituency, noting that a division will go a long way toward contributing to equitable development in all parts of West Mamprusi.
With a current population of 121,117 and a total land size of 2,610.44 square kilometers, the Walewale constituency is said to be the largest in the Northeast region.
