Werner replaces Pulisic shows Chelsea’s strength in depth – Chilwell

The England international believes his team is well equipped to deal with the rigors of a packed national and European match roster.

Ben Chilwell says Chelsea showed their strength in depth on Saturday when Timo Werner scored in a 3-0 win against Burnley after coming in for the injured Christian Pulisic.

American winger Pulisic was initially named in the starting lineup for the game at Turf Moor, but injured his hamstring in the warm-up, forcing manager Frank Lampard to make a late personnel change.

Summer signing Werner came up from the bench to replace Pulisic on the wing and seal a good victory for the London club with his third goal in the 70th minute after goals from Hakim Ziyech and Kurt Zouma put them in control.

With the congested schedule putting even greater pressure on players, being able to deal with injuries will be vital for any team looking to compete for trophies this season.

Chilwell says Chelsea have the strength to win titles, and that competition for places also ensures that no one can become complacent about their place on the team.

“Unfortunately Christian got injured in the warm-up and we are all disappointed in him, but when you have Timo to come in he is positive and shows the strength in depth that we have,” he told the club’s website.

“That competition pushes us all, and it is one of the key components of a good squad. We have a lot of good players, two or three in each position fighting for the jersey. That will help us move forward. “

Chilwell also praised Chelsea’s attitude and character in their win over the Clarets, and the Blues have now kept four consecutive clean sheets in all competitions.

“It was a perfect day for us in terms of performance and attitude,” added the former Leicester defender.

“It was a difficult match. We knew that if we weren’t prepared for a fight, we could be intimidated. That’s what they want, make it difficult for them. But we arrived ready for the fight and we also played our style of football, which is important, and we achieved another clean sheet and three good goals.

“Everybody made a change. We looked clinical in front of goal and solid as a defensive unit again.”
