The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition Democratic National Congress (NDC) have pledged to preserve the peace of the country after the court issues its ruling on the electoral petition.
The two sides have also promised to urge their supporters to exercise restraint and desist from any provocative act that may undermine public order.
The parties reached an agreement at the III Consultative Meeting of the Ministry of National Security on Thursday, February 25.
The meeting was chaired by Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare with the attendance of 30 personalities.
Present at the meeting were Presidential Security Advisor, Brigadier General (rtd) Emmanuel Okyere, Minister of National Security designated Albert Kan-Dapaah, Minister of the Interior designated Ambrose Dery, Inspector General of Police James Oppong Boanuh and the Chief of Defense Staff, Rear Admiral Seth Amoama.
Representing the NDC were former National Security Minister Kofi Totobi Quakyi, former National Security Coordinator Lt. Col. (rtd) Larry Gbevlo Lartey, former Deputy National Security Coordinator Baffour Assasie-Gyimah and National Vice President Kofi Attoh.
Minister-designate Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in a statement said: “Both sides reviewed the security arrangements in place for the conduct of the elections and expressed divergent concerns about the events that characterized the collection and declaration of the results,” he said.
“They called the [Ghana] Police Service to improve the surveillance of electoral materials in future elections “.
They also called for full investigations into the incidents in the Odododiodoo, Savelugu, Ablekuma Central, Sefwi Wiawso and Techiman South constituencies.
“With regard to the ongoing electoral petition, all parties committed to the need to preserve the peace after the verdict, urging their supporters to act with restraint and desist from any provocative act that could undermine law and order.”
