The Okada Jockeys Association of Ghana (ORAG) has said it will keep “feet on fire” for former President John Mahama to fulfill its promise to legalize Okada when they vote for him to win the December 7, 2020 election.
Mahama made the campaign promise a few weeks ago and reiterated it during the launch of the 2020 manifesto of the Democratic National Congress on Monday, September 7, 2020 at the University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA).
The ORAG in a statement on Tuesday said that it had become aware of “the official documentation of the party’s promise, through its standard-bearer, John Dramani Mahama, to legalize and regulate the use of motorcycles and tricycles for commercial use on page 93 of what they call the People’s Manifesto ”.
According to the ORAG, the documentation of the promise comes not only as “refreshing news, but as a great advance in the defense of a lifetime for our operations to be legalized and regulated.”
He continued: “If ever our call was heeded, it was when we made a passionate call to the NDC manifesto committee to reconsider the law your government passed in 2012 to prohibit our activities.
“Democracy wins when the aspirations of the people form the fulcrum around which policymakers build their intended policies and implement them to address the initial challenges of society.
“This is exactly what the NDC People’s Manifesto has done and we are very grateful for it.”
ORAG added: “There is no commercial motorcyclist and cyclist in Ghana today who does not want to go about their business without police harassment,” noting: “We made a blanket call and John Mahama answered yes. ”
He emphasized that while the association thanks Mr. Mahama for listening to them and considering his plight in the NDC manifesto, he wants to “put on the record” that he will “keep his feet on fire when the good people of Ghana give him victory in the elections. from December “.
ORAG said that “the days when political promises were made just to win votes and the opposite was done when victory was achieved, they no longer have a place in our governance structure.”
The group added: “The Association, within the week, will address a press conference to make public our position on the upcoming elections and the role our members will play in the campaign.”
“Once again we want to remind the other political parties that the deadline for our one-week ultimatum to make public their position on the legalization and regulation of Okada is fast approaching.
“Once again, we congratulate the NDC and John Mahama for taking the initiative to officially publicize the party’s position on the matter.”
