The Ghana Police Service’s Department of Transport and Motor Traffic (MTTD) has reiterated its commitment to strictly enforce road safety regulations during the Easter holidays this year.

MTTD reports indicate that there has been an 11 percent increase in traffic accidents between January and February 2021 compared to the same period in 2020 with fears that this could worsen during the Easter holidays.

Talking to Citi News, the Director in charge of education, research and training at the MTTD, Supt. Alexander Obeng said his team will not relent in its efforts to arrest highway violators.

According to him, so far about 423 people have been arrested for various violations of traffic regulations since the beginning of the year.

“Between January and February we arrested 455 people. So far, 423 people have appeared in court and charged with disobeying traffic regulations and the court has so far sentenced 362 and two of them are in jail and the rest have been fined by GHS205000. So we hope that mixing and these proactive strategies will go a long way in instilling, if not compliant, a high sense of detection and a high sense of apprehension among motorists. ”

Earlier, the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, asked citizens, especially drivers, to help reduce traffic accidents during Easter celebrations.

According to the president Akufo-Addo , the statistics available from the MTTD indicate that more people continue to die on our roads, which he wants to avoid.

Therefore, he called on drivers to lower their speed limits to help the police service ensure that Ghanaians are safe during the festive period.

“Year after year, accidents have been tragically part of the Easter celebrations. This year, we must do everything possible to minimize its incidence. The Ghana Police Service Department of Transit and Transportation has reiterated its determination to enforce traffic laws and regulations. I hope this Easter is celebrated without traffic accidents. Let’s help them in this effort by minimizing our speed. ”
