The Electoral Commission (EC) will be fair and transparent in conducting the general elections this year, assured the President of the EC, Ms. Jean Mensa, to all stakeholders.
He said the EC had instituted reforms to ensure that the elections were free from manipulation.

He added that the EC had also involved its main stakeholders in all the activities it had carried out so far to ensure the transparency, accountability and credibility of the surveys.

“As a commission, we are helping to generate transparency and accountability in our internal processes before the elections and we have the just conviction that the way we conduct ourselves before, during and after the elections will be fundamental to the peaceful outcome that we hope to see on voting day and the following days, ”said the EC president.

Ms. Mensa gave security last Sunday in Accra at the national launch of the 2020 Peacekeeper Campaign by the Church of Pentecost.

The campaign, which is themed “Seek Peace and Follow It (Psalm 34:14),” seeks to educate and challenge Ghanaians to be agents of peace as the nation prepares for the 2020 elections.

Transparency and accountability

Ms Mensa said that the EC was assuming its duties to ensure that the will of Ghanaians and of God was upheld, adding that “with God as my guide and help, I am sure I will not let him down or the people of Ghana. ” .

“As a Christian, I firmly believe in the principles that Christ upholds: justice, peace and truth. I am committed to ensuring that these principles are reflected in everything that I and the commission do, I am committed to being fair to carry out my activities without fear or favor, ”he said.

Ms. Mensa urged the various political parties to join with the EC to educate the public about their operations and activities, stating that such an association would help promote the necessary peace.

He said that the EC’s priority was to guarantee peace in the conduct of the elections.

“We recognize that this year is a crucial year as we go to the polls on December 7th. What we say and do will have a positive or negative influence on the nation. Therefore, we have resolved that our activities and words must leave a positive and lasting impact on our beloved nation, ”he said.

He urged the media to remain the guardians of Ghana’s democracy and to play their role as envisioned by the framers of the constitution.

“As a gateway to information, you must be courteous in your communication and you must not use your platform to mislead citizens or fuel conflict and confusion. It is up to you, as information channels, to be instruments and agents of peace, ”he said.

Free and fair elections

For his part, the President of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, praised the EC for a smooth compilation of the new biometric voter registration.

However, he indicated that for an election to be seen as free and fair, all the processes in the chain, from voter registration to the declaration of results, played very key roles.

As a result, he urged the EC to undertake its activities and conduct itself in such a way as to gain the trust of all interested parties.

Ensure peace

On the part of the political parties and candidates, Apostle Nyamekye encouraged them to undertake their politics in a way that did not seek to smear their opponents.

“The politics of name calling, ethnocentric trivia, and unnecessary rivalry that exacerbate tensions must end our political discourse and other forms of engagement,” he said.

He also appealed to Ghanaians to be objective and constructive in their criticism and not to be unduly blinded by this political coloration.

“Let us have the courage to correct our politicians when they are wrong and appreciate and encourage when they do what is appropriate and appropriate,” said the COP president.
