Hundreds of cyclists from Okada in Accra have supported Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s proposal to offer them a much safer livelihood, admitting that Okada’s business inevitably carries much greater risk.
According to the passengers, they fully accept the vice president’s plan for them, as their decision to venture into the Okada business is the result of their inability to afford much safer livelihood alternatives.
Riders in their number followed Dr Bawumia’s convoy during his recent campaign tour of Greater Accra.
On the streets of Kawukudi in Accra and other suburbs, they openly supported Dr. Bawumia as he sought a second term for the New Patriotic Party (PNP) led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Meanwhile, the Democratic National Congress (NDC) has pledged to legalize and regulate Okada’s business.
His proposal has been popular with some of the Okada riders, but last week’s show of support for the vice president who had proposed replacing their bikes with cars through a flexible loan scheme means Okada riders are divided on the matter. .
“Oh. Okada is good, but the car business is safe. That accident doesn’t happen like with Okada. With okada, the car can hit you at any time. But the car will be different. If I get a car, I want it,” he revealed Inusah Musah, pilot of Okada for four years.
“What the NDC said is good, but when are they going to create different paths for us? If they mean that it is legal without a new road or road, then it is the same. The same risk. You can’t widen the road all at once, ”said Mensah Atta.
Several others who took to the streets with their bicycles to support Dr. Bawumia, said they were in favor of the PNP and his proposal.
