The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, urged the government to “lead by example” as the country continues to produce more graduates in the business environment.
He has urged the country’s technical universities not to deviate from their mandate and focus on quality entrepreneurs to fill the mid-to-high-level workforce that the nation requires to progress.
She gave advice during the first (virtual) session of the 13th Congregation for Bachelor of Technology Programs at Sunyani Technical University (STU).
Nana Amfo called on the government to recognize graduates of technical universities in their location and create an enabling environment that enables private individuals to create sustainable jobs.
“Trust me, business success doesn’t depend so much on our course structure as on the business environment. Now that it is very clear that it is impossible for the public sector to absorb all the graduates that we are producing, the government must take the talk about entrepreneurship to the next level of practice, ”he emphasized.
“We need to preach and put our money where our mouths are,” added Nana Amfo, reminding graduates that “the life of a technical graduate can be unpredictable, exhausting and exhausting. But all of this provides moments of opportunity to bring true change and valuable service to our communities and the world. “
He said traditional universities should think about employable skills they could instill, when introducing new programs, saying “you already have that and you don’t have to lose it.”
A total of 389 graduates obtained Bachelor of Technology degrees in Engineering, TVET, Applied Sciences and Technology, Applied Arts, as well as Business and Management disciplines at the ceremony held under the theme “Training in Technical and Vocational Education: the key to sustainable job creation in Ghana “.
STU Vice Chancellor Professor Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah explained that the university had obtained accreditation to run seven new four-year BTech programs, which were to be launched in January 2021.
They include; BTech Mechanical Engineering, BTech Civil Engineering, BTech Construction and Technology, BTech Hotel and Tourism Management, BTech General Agriculture and BTech Fashion Design Technology.
These programs, Professor Adinkrah-Appiah explained, would run at the same time as the university’s 11 existing BTech recharge programs, adding that the institution had also received authorization for the introduction of another five four-year BTech programs, while that another six were pending in the National Council of Technical Education (NCTE).
