Emeritus Professor Elizabeth Ardayfio-Schandorf, former Vice President of Arts and Sciences at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS), has advocated for a national dialogue on the role of the family in national development.
He suggested that, in light of the impact of ongoing globalization on the family, the government should mobilize resources and talents to initiate such a national dialogue.
Emeritus Professor Ardayfio-Schandorf noted that to that end, GAAS, with its pool of experience and human resources, could partner with policymakers for such an attractive exercise.
He said that such dialogue should involve all stakeholders, both public and private, including; Non-governmental organizations and special agencies to debate the proposed agenda and develop medium and long-term Strategic Plans that complement existing policies and plans to improve the viability and stability of the family.
“Achieving our national goals depends on how well families are empowered to contribute to the national development agenda,” said Emeritus Professor Ardayfio-Schandorf, in her third presentation in Accra during the GAAS JB Danquah conferences (Series 54) .
The JB Danquah Memorial Lecture Series was instituted in 1968 in memory of a member of the Academy Foundation, Dr. Joseph Boakye Danquah, who died in prison in February 1965.
JB Danquah was a lawyer, philosopher, academic, novelist, playwright, politician, and journalist.
The event consists of a series of three lectures given by a member of the Academy or a distinguished non-member.
Speaking on the topic “The family, climate change and national development, Professor Emerita Ardayfio-Schandorf said that communities must be strengthened to promote patriotism and sustainability by involving local authorities and all relevant opinion leaders, ensuring that family policies strengthen the resilience of families and households by addressing environmental security, and promoting the conservation of water, soil, forests and energy.
Emeritus Professor Ardayfio-Schandorf said that as part of the campaign, families, as well as governmental and non-governmental organizations, private sectors and individuals should participate in the conservation of afforestation.
He urged policy makers to create opportunities through local agencies to educate families to understand relevant and cultural indigenous values and how to apply them when faced with challenges related to globalization and modernization.
Emeritus Professor Ardayfio-Schandorf, recommended the establishment of a values-based system to influence sustainable development through the application of policy formulation and the review of family legal frameworks to determine the strategies necessary to strengthen the structure of family and allow you to make critical decisions. within its locus.
“Research is critical in all efforts to develop a national strategic plan and in disseminating the findings to decision-making bodies and interested parties as a way forward to improve the role and impact of the family.” said Professor Emeritus Ardayfio-Schandorf.
“Educational institutions, research centers and non-governmental organizations and all related bodies should focus on family-related research.”
She suggested that monitoring and evaluation systems be established in ministries and agencies backed by carefully designed organizational support to ensure that desired and achievable results are obtained.
