The vice presidential candidate of the opposition Democratic National Congress (NDC), Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has said that not all assignments for intern teachers stalled, as those who had already been absorbed into the system and received assignments they continued to enjoy it. except for new entrants.
According to Professor Opoku-Agyemang, who was Minister of Education during the old Mahama administration, before assignments were stopped and replaced by the loan system, a one-year notice was given to all faculties of education.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang spoke on Adehyee 99.1 FM’s morning show ‘Ghana Ekosen’ in Kumasi on Friday October 16, 2020.
He explained that the loan system was started on the basis of proposals received from the directors of teacher training schools.
“In fact, the previous proposals were presented by the directors who propose that some of them become payments.”
“So I thought: why should some pay a fee for others to enjoy the free allowance? If so, let them all borrow, because it is more equitable. “
“Because if you don’t worry, the person you make to pay the fees is the one who can’t pay, if that’s the case then everyone should take out a loan. So that’s where the whole idea came from. “
“When the loan was introduced, there were some who were still enjoying the assignment, so I was surprised that some of them came on the radio saying they were in their second year and their assignments had stalled so they couldn’t progress, it hurt. because as a young person, you shouldn’t be telling such lies, ”noted Professor Opoku-Agyemang.
In addition, he emphasized that universities were notified one year in advance before the change in loan allocations was made.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang said: “Those who were already receiving the subsidy, if anyone can say that it stalled, I’m here, they can call. They enjoyed the allowance at all times.
“They weren’t affected by the rule and we gave them a full year notice that the rookies would be the ones to benefit from the loan.”
“We gave an ad for a whole year, people use it for propaganda.”
