We don’t want leased cars: ‘Okada’ passengers | Politics

The Ghana Motorcycle Association (Okada) has criticized Dr. Bawumia’s claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not succumb to pressure to make commercial use of motorcycles, popularly known as ‘okada’, a legal means of commercial transportation, but would prefer to lease vehicles to passengers.

The association said that what they need now are safety regulations and that they should not be forced to drive cars instead of driving their “Okada”.

Dr. Bawumia described the outlawing of “Okada” in the country as a “risky business” and announced the alternative proposed by the government of offering new cars to operators on a lease basis so that they can carry out their activities in a much safer way. .

But in response to Dr. Bawunia’s suggestion in an interview on Thursday, the association’s national president, Fatawu Ali, speaking in Twi, said that “young people have already gotten involved, so we await regulations on this.”

He said, “Okada picks only one passenger, but look at the accidents that happened on our roads recently, how many people died?”

Mr. Ali added that “we are pilots from Okada. We are not drivers, so if they give us a car, when are we going to learn to drive?

“Even if he’s driving, he’s still in danger. How many of us can you give a car to because there are thousands of us across the country?

“We do not agree with that. We like the Okada because even the residents of the vice president’s village are wearing Okada. We need to find a security solution instead of the car. “
Fatawu Ali added that “most of us are already in the Okada business.”
