The National Communications Authority (NCA) has criticized NDC standard-bearer John Dramani Mahama for alleging that the Authority may shut down the internet in the country on December 7, 2020.

According to the Authority, it does not have the power to shut down the Internet remotely nor has it ordered the service operators to do so.

In a press release copied on GhanaWeb, the NCA explained that “as part of its mandate, the NCA has licensed various categories of service providers to provide Internet connectivity in Ghana. They include Internet service providers, broadband wireless access service providers, and mobile network operators (MNOs). There are also several international submarine fiber optic cables and several satellite systems that provide Ghana with Internet access. The NCA does not have access or “keys” to any of these networks and therefore cannot shut down the Internet remotely.

“The Authority has not ordered any of its licensees to turn off the Internet on Election Day as stated in the news report, and there is no intention to do so,” the statement emphasized.

The NCA also called John Dramani Mahama’s claim unfounded and urged Ghanaians to ignore his comments.
