The New Patriotic Party (PNP) has called allegations that it is using the police to intimidate opposition supporters in the Asawase constituency as unfounded.

It follows the arrest of some 10 supporters of the opposition Democratic National Congress who were detained in an anti-theft police raid.

Asawase Member of Parliament Muntaka Mubarak claimed that the recurring arrest of NDC loyalists was an orchestration of some elements of the New Patriotic Party.

“It’s getting difficult since the voter registration exercise, you are there and they just arrest their agents for no good reason. We go to the police station and bail the person out. At night they came to arrest these people but the police tell us that they were looking for some suspects in a robbery case and they found out that they were in the area, “the legislator told the media after Sunday’s arrests.

He pointed to the campaign operations director of the PNP’s Asawase constituency, Ali Suraj, as one of the influences using power and money to manipulate the police.

But Suraj is demanding a retraction and an apology for such comments that he says have damaged his image in the constituency.
