The family of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings says they will welcome any decision to name the University of Development Studies (UDS) in his honor.
The comment comes after the visit of a delegation from the university, led by its vice chancellor, Professor Gabriel Ayum Teye, to the residence of the deceased Rawlings to commiserate with the family.
“We have quickly verified with your excellence and I have your authority to inform you that the family has never been against this prospective suggestion and we would have absolutely no objection if your university can achieve it,” said a family member and diplomat, Victor Gbeho he told the group.
The debate over changing the school’s name after the former head of state was reintroduced by President Akufo-Addo when he addressed UDS parishioners at a graduation ceremony in Tamale on November 14.
According to the president, although Mr. Rawlings had previously rejected the offer that the facility be named after him, he deserves to be commended for his immense role in establishing the school.
But this has been opposed by some people and organizations, including the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), who argue that the former president never wanted the school to bear his name and that his last wishes must be obeyed.
But responding to the position of the family, the vice-rector of the school, Professor Gabriel Ayum Teye, said that the support of the family has been noticed and that any decision of the government will be welcomed by the direction of the institution.
“We have already given our blessing,” he added.
