Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association [GFA]Henry Asante Twum, has said that the association is in talks with the Government to allow fans to enter stadiums for football matches.
Soccer fans have been banned from watching matches in the various stadiums due to the impact and as part of measures to combat the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Initially, the government agreed to allow 25% of fans to enter the various stadiums before the start of the new football season in November.
Asante Twum claims that clubs are struggling to cope financially because gate earnings are not coming, the main source of income for some clubs.
“We have engaged with the sector ministry and we are still talking with the government to allow fans to enter the different stadiums and we hope that the government will accept our proposal,” he said. Kessben FM.
“I have been to various places this year and the number of people I see behind the doors is overwhelming, knowing full well that there is a ban by the government.
“What I am saying is that nobody is happy with playing the games behind closed doors, not even economically and financially, a lot is being taken away from these clubs.
“Our industry is not strong enough to do without gate revenue, our clubs rely heavily on gate revenue, so playing behind closed doors is hectic for clubs.”
The 2020/21 season of the Ghana Premier League enters the seventh week of matches this weekend, with other competitions such as the National Division One League and the Women’s Premier League beginning in 2021.
