John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate of the Democratic National Congress (NDC) has reiterated his promise to build a new modern hospital in Bawku Township.
He said that even though there was a missionary hospital in Bawku serving the health needs of the people, it was critical that the area benefit from a modern government hospital to complement the township’s Presbyterian hospital.
“We promised that when we took office after the 2016 elections, we would build a new hospital in Bawku Central. Unfortunately, we did not win the 2016 elections and that is why the hospital has not been delivered. “
Mahama said this when he paid a courtesy visit to the Supreme Chief of the Bawku Traditional Area, Zug-raan Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, as part of his three-day tour of the Upper East Region.
The NDC presidential candidate emphasized that “we are repeating that promise, that if we win the 2020 election, we know there is a mission hospital here, but due to the expanding size of Bawku, we need a new, larger and more modern government hospital in Bawku. . . “
He said the next NDC government would implement an additional program to bolster the National Health Insurance program.
“So that any Ghanaian who does not have a national health insurance card, when they go to the hospital, once they have a Ghana card showing they are Ghanaian, if they present their Ghana card, they will receive treatment free of charge.
“We realized that since 2007 the number of people who benefit from health insurance is only 40 percent of our population. Sixty percent of the Ghanaian population paid hospital bills when visiting health centers, ”said the former president.
According to Mr. Mahama, the NDC generally kept its promises whenever they were in government: “Everything we have in this traditional area, we always get when the NDC is in office. When the nuclear power plant comes into operation, there is no development.
He said the choice between the NDC and the NPP in the presidential and parliamentary elections was “very clear, but of course we must show respect to the people by coming in and asking for their vote.”
The Supreme Head of the Bawku Traditional Area, in a speech to the former president, called for unity and peace as they conducted their campaigns.
The Zug-raan Naba Azoka II prayed for God’s blessings for the presidential candidate and his entourage and granted Mr. Mahama permission to campaign in his traditional area.
