The Electoral Commission says it is 95% ready for the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.
In her briefing to parliament on the EC’s preparation for the elections, the EC president, Ms Jean Mensa, assured Ghanaians and parliamentarians that they are prepared for the elections.
The EC revealed that the Commission has acquired a wide variety of electoral materials including ballot boxes, identification jackets, rechargeable lamps, fingerprint stamps, stationery and others that have been distributed to various polling stations throughout the country.
Ms. Mensa said that the commission has purchased 147 vehicles to facilitate the movement of personnel and provide rapid delivery of goods materials from the regions to the districts.
“Sir. The chairman of the Commission acquired a wide variety of electoral materials for the 2020 elections. These include ballot boxes, fingerprint pads, stationery, identification jackets, voting booths, rechargeable lamps, indelible ink, educational posters. , stamps among others. As we speak, the distribution of these items to our regions and districts is well advanced. I can confirm that, as a result of the meticulous planning and distribution mechanisms employed, we have finished 95% with the distribution of electoral materials to our various locations throughout the country. What remains to be delivered are the Ballots and Records. Acquisition of vehicles To facilitate the movement of our personnel and promote the fulfillment of their mandate at the grassroots level, the Commission acquired several vehicles. 147 vehicles consisting of: 15 motorcycles30 four-wheel drive107 pick ups8 tran trucks sporte2 Coaster Buses ”.
When detailing the cost of these materials, he added: “These were acquired for a total cost of 38 million 373 thousand 545 cedis (38,373,545.00). This has promoted the efficiency of our staff, as well as the rapid movement of goods and materials from our stores to our regions and districts. It has also helped eliminate the costs associated with hiring and renting vehicles.
It is important to note that close to 95% of our acquisitions were made through an open bidding process. We do this by advertising all our recruitment processes in the newspapers.
This political decision introduced competition into our acquisitions and helped lower prices. Ultimately, it ensured good value for money in our procurement processes. In due course, the Commission will release a report showing the huge savings achieved as a result of this decision.
