Watford has explained why they are ready to vote against plans to resume the Premier League, citing Liverpool as one reason why neutral motives should not be used.
The Hornets have teamed up with fellow wrestlers Aston Villa and Brighton to voice their opposition to the ‘Restart Project,’ which hopes to have the best return flight to action in mid-June.
At least six clubs are understood to be against the plans, which the Premier League hoped to end at its next meeting on Monday after the government outlined its closure strategy on Sunday.
However, it looks like the split could spark more discussions next week before a roadmap to get back to action is agreed.
The decision of all the clubs to give up the advantage of playing at home and playing their remaining games in neutral places is the main problem, and those who fight against relegation are determined to play home games in their own stadiums.
And Watford President and CEO Scott Duxbury believes Liverpool’s confidence in its own fans not to congregate at Anfield if and when the title is secured proves that the same can apply to fans of all clubs.
“Do the authorities seriously believe that our clubs, on their own grounds, cannot offer a safe environment for the 300 people involved in organizing a single Premier League match?” Duxbury said.
“Because, in the world of Covid-19, there is no completely safe environment wherever we play.”
“The police are also talking about the restrictions of fans when soccer is restarted and that this is a concern for the authorities, but I think we would have more control over the fans who play on our own field.”
“After all, Liverpool emphasized that their fans would be sensible and would listen to the club’s instructions when their own mayor opposed a return to football.”
“If Liverpool sincerely believes in this when they have a 25-point lead and are on the verge of the first title for 30 years, I am confident that all the other fans will follow suit.”
Watford is the only team to beat Liverpool in the Premier League this season after winning 3-0 at Vicarage Road in February.
And writing in The Times, Duxbury has suggested that the Reds are happy to sign up for ‘Project Restart’ because it gives them a chance to win the title.
“Critics will say that my position is based on self-interest and they would be absolutely right,” he said. “I have a duty to protect my club and the people who work in it.
“There is no altruism in the Premier League. There are 20 different vested interests, which sometimes align, but most of the time they work exclusively to protect each individual club.”
“This is why some clubs are happy to sign up for Project Restart because arguably there is only one advantage to participating in this committed format; it means Liverpool can win the title, other clubs can reserve their place in Europe next season or potentially fight your climbing the table from a safe position.
“But when at least six clubs, and I suspect there are more, are concerned about the distinct downside and devastating effects of playing in this kind of distorted nine-game mini-league, then I think the Premier League has a duty to address those concerns. “
