Shakhtar Donetsk remained atop Group B of the Champions League as they held a goalless draw against an Inter Milan team in Kiev.
Inter hit the crossbar twice: Nicolo Barella from 18 meters and then through Romelu Lukaku, whose powerful free kick was launched to the crossbar by 19-year-old goalkeeper Anatolii Trubin.
Lautaro Martínez also fired wide from six yards after Trubin had saved Marcelo Brozovic’s goal as Shakhtar followed up their surprising 3-2 win at Real Madrid with another good result.
Inter have not reached the knockout stages of the Champions League since 2011-12 and now have two points from two games.
But coach Antonio Conte may be wondering how his team failed to win against a Shakhtar who only had one shot on goal.
Shakhtar caused a huge surprise last week when the Ukrainians, without eight players due to Covid-19, scored three times in the first 42 minutes on their way to a 3-2 victory against the Royal Spanish champions.
Coach Luis Castro rewarded his young team Shakhtar by naming the same starting eleven, with eight players 21 and younger.
However, Inter dominated everything. Lukaku went one-on-one with Trubin, but the keeper blocked his effort, before Barella’s rebound hit the wood.
Former Manchester United striker Lukaku, who had scored in each of his previous nine European games for Inter, headed wide from a corner and then had a superb free kick blocked by the impressive Trubin.
The teenager did well to stop Brozovic’s effort, but was fortunate that Martinez could not finish off the rebound with the unguarded goal while Shakhtar held the tie.
Inter will play away at Real Madrid next Tuesday, with Shakhtar at home to Borussia Monchengladbach before the return matches three weeks later.
