Was Bamford offside for pointing out? – Latest Ghana Soccer News, Live Scores, Results

If the goal had stayed, it would have made it 1-1

A goal discarded for pointing out where you are going to run.

Sounds incredible, but that’s what seemed to happen to Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford in a 4-1 loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The 27-year-old was comfortably on the side when he raised his arm to tell Mateusz Klich where to play the ball and ran to score, seemingly leveling for his team.

However, after a video review by the assistant referee (VAR), the goal was ruled out, prompting a furious reaction from many fans and experts.

‘The worst decision in football history’

“That’s the worst I’ve ever seen. The worst in football history,” said former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage, who was watching the game for BT Sport at the time.

“Absurd,” Game of the Day host and former England striker Gary Lineker posted on social media. “That’s another ridiculous offside decision by the VAR to disallow Bamford’s goal. In fact, I just hate the way it’s being implemented.”

Former Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas told BBC Radio 5 Live: “It was an absolutely disgusting decision not to give Bamford the goal. He has done it for having long arms and for aiming where he wants the ball to be played.

“It’s ridiculous, we have lost our minds in our sport at the moment. There is no doubt that that would have had an impact on the game.”

Bamford managed to score a legitimate goal later in the match, but it was just a consolation ‘Not even the referee could understand it’

Bamford himself still didn’t know why he was ruled out after the game.

“I don’t understand the rule,” he said. “You can’t score with your arm. It doesn’t make sense.

“It happened to me today but I have seen it numerous times. It is ruining football. You want to see goals. To be discarded for something like that is silly.

“Even the referee couldn’t understand it. When the players and officials can’t understand it, does it make sense?”

Was it a wrong decision? The Premier League is taking a stricter approach to handball this season

According to the letter of the law, it was the correct decision to discard it.

While the aiming action itself was not the reason for ruling it out, it was the fact that his arm was considered to be in an offside position regardless of his movement.

A change in the handball rule means that the upper arm, a part of the body that a person can score with, may be out of play.

The question is, will Bamford aim for balls in the future?

“It’s difficult,” said the Englishman.

“You’re giving away balls for jumping with your arms up, which is a natural jump. You’re giving away offside when someone points where they want the ball, which is part of the game.

“If they asked me what the offside rule is, I couldn’t tell them. It’s my job to stay in play, but I don’t know.”
