Volta militants plan to set fire to Ho’s central market

The Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service issued a joint statement saying they were able to thwart attempts by secessionist groups in the Volta region to set fire to the central Ho market.

“It is hereby declared that an earlier preventive operation on Thursday, September 24, 2020 foiled a plan by the Group to burn down the Ho Central Market and other key facilities,” the statement jointly signed by the Director of Public Relations of Ghana Armed Forces , Colonel Eric Aggrey-Quarshie, and the Director of Public Affairs for the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Sheila Kessie Abayie-Buckman.

In addition, the statement said that 31 members of the militant group, who set up barricades to stop all entries and exits, to and from the region, respectively, were arrested on Friday, September 25.

The Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF), which has declared the region independent of Ghana, insists on the autonomy of the Ghana area, hence its activities.

One of the militants, according to security agencies, was killed during his attempt to seize the Volta Region on Friday.

Three others were injured.

Furthermore, “the Commander of the Aveyime Police was injured and has been evacuated to the Police Hospital,” the statement said.

SECURITY AGENCIES UNDER CONTROL ACTIVITIES OF HOMELAND STUDY GROUP FOUNDATION (HSGF)

1. The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the Ghana Police Service (GPS) make joint reference to the activities of the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF), which took place in the early morning of Friday 25 September 2020 in the general area. of Juapong, Sogakope, Aveyime, Mepe and Akuse and to assure the general public that the situation has since been brought under control.

2. It is confirmed that around 2:00 a.m. M. From the date indicated, elements of the HSGF attacked the Aveyime and Mepe police stations and made new blockades on the main roads of Juapong-Accra and Sogakope-Accra, thus interrupting the daily routine of the citizens.

3. In response to these illegal acts, a joint military-police team, together with other security organizations, was deployed in the affected areas and managed to arrest 31 members of the Group.

Since then, these detainees have been brought to Accra for questioning. The exchanges of fire between the Group and the Security Agencies led to the death of one (1) member of the HSGF and injuries to three (3) others.

The Aveyime police commander was also injured and has been evacuated to the police hospital.

Injured members of the HSGF have also been evacuated to Ho University Hospital.

4. All roadblocks have also been cleared and security agencies have taken control of roads and strategic facilities within the Region.

It is hereby indicated that a previous preventive operation on Thursday, September 24, 2020 foiled a Group plan to burn down the Ho Central Market and other key facilities.

5. We wish to reaffirm to the general public that the security and intelligence agencies have firm control of the situation and remain undaunted in their determination to preserve and protect the sanctity of the entire territory of our beloved country.

6. In the meantime, the general public is kindly requested to remain calm and volunteer any relevant information about the Group’s activities so that the necessary action can be taken.
