Virgil van Dijk insists he was trying to do his best and was not being arrogant against Leeds, despite Jamie Carragher’s claim to the contrary.
The Liverpool center-back, normally a very confident pair of hands, was far from his best against newly promoted Leeds on Saturday.
Van Dijk was the sole culprit for the away team’s second goal in Liverpool’s 4-3 win, after lazily failing to clear a long ball inside the box.
The fumble was picked up by Leeds forward Patrick Bamford, who shot home, prompting an immediate response from Carragher commenting on Sky Sports.
“That is too arrogant,” said the former Liverpool center-back.

“Try to spin it around rather than just deal with it. Maybe it’s because it’s Leeds United, a new team, and he thinks it’s too easy.”
“But Patrick Bamford received a gift from that man.”
Responding to criticism of beIN SPORTS, Van Dijk said: “It was one of those … they are situations that can happen.
“I always try to do my best and that’s what I did. Unfortunately, a goal came out, but I don’t worry about it.”
And he added: “We expected an intense match.
“Nobody wants to concede goals, but it was intense for both teams. We trained for that and we knew it could happen.
“The points are huge, of course. [Leeds] It’s going to upset a lot of teams in the league, I think it was good for us to get all three points. But we still have things to work on. “
