Ghanaian winger Ernest Asante came off the bench to help AC Omonia Nicosia advance to the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League qualifying round at the expense of Red Star Belgrade midweek.
The Cypriot giants were the surprising package in the provisional format playoffs for the European elite competition.
The Green Boys, who achieved a surprising victory over Polish giants Legia Warsaw in the last round, entered the match against Red Stars Belgrade as losers.
But Henning Berg’s men dominated their opponents and deservedly opened the scoring through Michael Luftner in the 31st minute.
However, AC Omonia were unable to maintain the lead at half-time as Mirko Ivanic hit point-blank at half-time to restore parity for the visitors.
With the game heading for penalties in the 90th minute, Ernest Asante replaced Thiago Santos in the 118th minute.
The Ghanaian was chosen from the penalty shooters and did it right by sending the goalkeeper down the wrong path on the third penalty shoot-out.
AC Omonia managed to beat the Serbs 2-1 on penalties to advance to the semi-finals of the competition.
The Cypriot side will face the Greek Olympiakos in the next round. The match will be played on Wednesday, September 23 at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium.
