Ghana’s top-flight AshGold suffered a major setback on Thursday when armed robbers stormed its Len Clay stadium in Obuasi and took lighting equipment worth around $ 172,000.

The theft occurs just two weeks before the country’s top flight starts and also months before the club plays in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Obuasi police have started investigations into a cable theft case that AshantiGold SC has reported to them.

AngloGold Ashanti Company Limited, the mining company that owns the community club, has been called in to assess the damage caused by the theft.

No arrests have been made as of yet as the search for the thieves continues.

The thieves cut the wires intended for electrical work at the reflector and other essential wires at Len Clay Stadium.

AshantiGold SC will host Karela United FC at the same venue on the opening day of the 2020/2021 Ghana Premier League on November 15, 2020.
