Jorge Valdano has revealed to Koke that he wanted to sign him from the Atlético de Madrid quarry during his time at Real Madrid.
Real Madrid’s move unleashed fury at Atlético, who then proposed a deal for Los Blancos to sign to dissuade the reigning Spanish champions from moving players away from their rivals in the city.
“I had the famous idea to sign you,” Valdano told Koke in Universo Valdano. “It was such an important move that it sparked a meeting with [Miguel Angel] Gil Marin to sign some kind of non-aggression treaty, and the problem was you.
“He saw that we had asked about you and said we couldn’t do that, not with you.”
Koke kept looking back on his youthful days at Atleti and confessed that he himself would never have expected to continue achieving what he has.
“I trusted myself, but I never thought to say that I was going to make the first team,” Koke said.
“I was 16 years old, I played with boys who had children in the second team. My father told me that maybe I wasn’t going to play much and that I had to be calm. Then I started playing and said I had to play here.”
