The Association of University Professors of Ghana (UTAG) of the College of Technology Education, Kumasi (COLTEK) and the College of Agricultural Education (CAGRIC) are pushing for an intern to be appointed as Vice Chancellor of Akenten Appiah-Menka University. of Training in Entrepreneurial Skills and Development (AA-USTED).
The Ashanti region-based institution became a full university last month following the approval of parliament on the basis of the passage of the Business Training and Development University law.
Since then, the question of who will be appointed Vice Chancellor of AA-YOU has been the subject of attention with some opinion pieces by Asare Kingsley on Modernghana that allege that the expected appointment has created tension between the leaders of COLTEK and that of CÁGRIC.
But in a joint statement from UTAG-COLTEK and UTAG-CAGRIC, they have dismissed the claims while insisting that the two educational institutions have always had good relations and continue to prosper under their respective leaders.
“First of all, we wish to emphatically state that the publications circulating are deliberate, ill-intentioned and maliciously motivated to mislead the President of the Republic of Ghana, HE Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Honorable Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh , and the general public on matters related to COLTEK and CAGRIC. The claims in the publications are unscientific, not academic, and a complete invention of the faceless author’s own imagination, ”reads in part the joint UTAG-COLTEK and UTAG CAGRIC press release.
The two groups have opposed the idea of appointing an external vice chancellor for the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Business Development.
According to them, COLTEK and CAGRIC have the men to fill the position and one must be appointed by the president.
“To put it simply, our highest expectation is that the president appoints one of our own to lead AA-YOU,” reads elsewhere in the press release.
He continued, “The appointment of a Vice Chancellor from the existing tried and tested academic and leadership structures of COLTEK and CAGRIC will consolidate the significant advances made in TVET education over the years and ensure that there is absolute peace and harmony in all campus of the new University for a fluid academic work ”.
