The US State Department has called for “independent, credible, impartial and thorough investigations” into “many credible reports” of irregularities in the Ugandan general election last week.

Longtime leader Yoweri Museveni was re-elected for a sixth term amid allegations of election fraud by his main rival Bobi Wine.

The president said the poll could be the “most cheat-free” in the history of the African nation.

In a statement, the US State Department said those guilty of electoral irregularities should be held accountable.

His spokesman Morgan Ortagus also condemned “the continuous attacks against political candidates” and urged the government to “respect their human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression.”

Opposition politicians, Bobi Wine, have told the BBC that she was not allowed to leave her home, which was surrounded by security forces. He says his family has run out of food.
