The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has called for the total withdrawal of the public universities bill from Parliament.
They say that the content of the bill does not favor university administrators and universities in general.
“Although the inclusion of GAUA is important to us, as we see the bill now, it is better if the passage is filed somewhere. The bill should not pass, ”Ghanaian Association of University Administrators (GAUA) President Kwabena Antwi-Konadu told Citi News.
He emphasized that, after studying the content of the Bill that was presented again to Parliament on December 15, 2020, for its consideration, they recognized that the recommendations presented by GAUA and other actors have not been considered.
However, he has called for more consultations and has asked Parliament not to rush to pass the bill.
“As a group critical of university management and administration, we are extremely surprised, concerned and disappointed by the deliberate attempt to sideline GAUA as a key player in university governance and operations.”
“This can even be seen clearly in the composition of the proposed Council which has all the unions on our campuses in representation except GAUA. This is highly regrettable, unfair, discriminatory and the utmost disregard for GAUA, the most critical group when it comes to governance and university administration to be treated this way. ”
The bill, which was withdrawn last November, was reformulated earlier this week in the House to harmonize the management structures of public universities.
Although, on Tuesday, December 15, 2020, Parliament passed the bill at the second reading stage, it was once again suspended due to concerns from various stakeholders, including the minority in Parliament.
