The Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumbungu, Mr. Ras Mubarak, has described President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s latest State of the Nation Speech (SONA) for his first term in government as empty and little Awesome.

He said the president’s projection of strong economic growth was far from reality, and Ghanaians across the country had not seen such growth.

Mr. Mubarak made the comment in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in reaction to President Akufo-Addo’s latest SONA to the Seventh Parliament of the Fourth Republic, as required by the 1992 Constitution.
The Seventh Parliament is dissolved at midnight on January 6, 2021.

President Akufo-Addo declared, among other things, that his government was able to implement important flagship programs, achieved single-digit inflation, and reduced fiscal deficits with three consecutive years of primary surpluses.

It also ensured a relatively stable exchange rate, a significant improvement in the current account with three consecutive years of trade surpluses, strong foreign exchange reserves and markedly low loan rates.

However, Mubarak said Ghanaians did not feel the change the president spoke of for the past four years, adding that people are still struggling to survive.

He said that many businesses were paralyzed as a result of COVID-19 and even before that there were real difficulties within the country.

Mubarak expressed his dismay at the silence of President Akufo-Addo on the numerous cases of violence and death witnessed in the elections on December 7, 2020.

However, Mr. Fuseini Issah, Member of Parliament for Okaikoi North, described the president’s presentation as excellent, given the number of achievements made by his government in the last four years.

He said the December 7 elections were generally peaceful and the violence witnessed was only isolated cases.

“The police have already started investigations into these cases and I hope that the culprits will be put on the books,” he said.

Mr. Issah commended President Akufo-Addo for paying tribute to the memory of the First President of the Fourth Republic, Flt. Jerry John Rawlings, who sadly passed away on November 12, 2020.
