NaCCA clarification follows outrage expressed at published textbooks denigrating sheep
Ghana’s National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has revealed that some textbooks on the market that negatively characterize Ewes and Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, have not been approved for use.
NaCCA’s clarification comes after some broadcasters voiced outrage over the elementary school children’s textbook that appears to denigrate sheep in the country.
According to former Citi FM announcer Richard Dela Sky, the book features Ewes and should be withdrawn.
“Some of the contents of this book (” Golden English ”) have caught my attention. Now, IF this book to educate our students actually contains the characterization captured in the image to the right, and IF it is indeed part of the ‘official’ books used to teach our children as some have suggested, then the Service of Ghana Education should withdraw it with immediate effect. I think the reason is obvious. In other words, the outrage speaks for itself, ”he wrote on Facebook.
Also commenting on the book, popular broadcaster Dzifa Bampoe wrote “When Richard Dela Sky shared this, I thought it was just an ‘ignorant’ mistake, but there are two other negative references to the people of Ewe. Then the blatant lies written about Osagyefo, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and the CPP, and I’m like we have to call this. I had to have long conversations with my daughter about Osagyefo. This is not good at all ”.
But in a statement, NaCCA said that the following textbooks that are making waves in the media have not been approved for use in schools.
The statement added, “In each of these books and others discovered on social media, the authors make inappropriate references to personalities and ethnic groups that are deemed unfortunate, in bad taste, and are in contradiction with the Book Submission Guidelines and the NaCCA approval methodology that guides the work of editors and authors “.
