Kaneshie Police are trying to unravel the circumstances that led to the shooting of three men in Abossey Okai during the Homowo Festival celebration in the area last Saturday.

Two of the men died while receiving treatment at the hospital, while the third person, who suffered serious gunshot wounds, is still admitted.
His condition is said to be very critical.

Identified deceased

The deceased have been identified as Mohammed Isaka, a 27-year-old butcher in the Kaneshie market, and Paul Adamu, unemployed and believed to be in his 20s.

The third victim, Jacob Abbey, also 27 and unemployed, suffered injuries to his right arm.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, DSP Ms. Afia Tenge, the incident occurred when the chief and the people of Abossey Okai organized their annual Homowo Festival without notifying the police.

Homowo festival

She said that around 4:40 p.m. last Saturday, the Kaneshie police received information that while the chief and people of Abossey Okai performed the usual rites towards the celebration of their annual Homowo Festival, shots were fired outside the chief’s palace, which led to some people getting injured.

He said the police rushed to the scene and, after confirming the information they received, they went to Sukura Community Hospital, where the victims had been transferred for the first time.

Hospital authorities

DSP Tenge said hospital authorities confirmed that Isaka had been brought in with serious gunshot wounds but died while receiving treatment.

The police were informed that Adamu, who also suffered gunshot wounds, was taken to Korle Bu University Hospital, but also passed away while receiving treatment there.

The Accra Police PRO said Abbey also suffered injuries to her right arm and was receiving treatment at the same hospital.

He said that the police had launched investigations into the incident to establish whether the shooting had something to do with the festival or not.

He said the investigations would help police track down, identify and arrest those responsible for the shooting and bring them to the search.

Meanwhile, Abossey Okai’s boss and queen mother and four other people have been arrested by police in connection with the shooting.

The five are Nii Abossey III, the Chief; Naa Korkoi II, the queen mother; Godfred Marmah Nelson, Okyeame I; Jacob Laryea, Okyeame II, and John Awuley Lartey.
