A circuit court in Accra has imprisoned two defendants who allegedly robbed a pharmacy at gunpoint in Dansoman.

The defendants are Shamsu Alhassan, a merchant, and Abdul Wahab Yakubu, an Okada (motorcycle) driver.

Alhassan has been charged with theft while Yakubu faces a narcotics possession charge.

They pleaded not guilty before the court presided over by Mr. Emmanuel Essandoh.

The court refused to admit the defendants on bail after the defense defended him.

Mr. Andy Vortia, who represented Yakubu, maintained that his client had a fixed place of residence and that he would not escape the jurisdiction.

According to the defense attorney, his client had people who would appear as bail when bail was granted and they added that he would appear and be tried.

The prosecution’s chief inspector, Simon Terkpertey, said the plaintiff was a pharmacy assistant at Demens Pharmacy in the Dansoman exhibition roundabout. Alhassan and Yakubu reside in Sahara near Dansoman and Banana Inn (all in Accra), respectively.

On August 2 of this year, around 3:15 pm, the plaintiff was in the pharmacy store when Alhassan entered the store apparently to buy an ointment.

Chief Inspector Terkpetey said the plaintiff then moved to remove the product from the shelf. Later, Alhassan threatened to shoot the author if he made any noise.

Alhassan then demanded the day’s sales and the whistleblower, who feared for his life, gave him an unspecified amount.

In addition, Alhassan took the plaintiff to the Manager’s office, searched the drawers, and took an unspecified amount.

The prosecution said that Alhassan, after obtaining the money, tried to escape with his unregistered motorcycle, but some witnesses stopped him.

Yakubu, who tried to take Alhassan’s motorcycle, was also arrested. When Yakubu was searched, some dried leaves were recovered that were suspected of being Indian hemp and candies allegedly mixed with Indian hemp.

The Prosecutor’s Office said that the defendants in their respective statements admitted the crimes.
