An Accra circuit court has imprisoned two defendants who allegedly robbed a pharmacy with firearms in Dansoman.

The defendants were; Shamsu Alhassan, merchant and Abdul Wahab Yakubu, pilot from Okada.

Alhassan had been charged with theft while Yakubu was facing a narcotics possession charge.

They pleaded not guilty before the court presided over by Mr. Emmanuel Essandoh.

The court refused to admit the defendants on bail after the defense defended him.

Mr. Andy Vortia, who represented Yakubu, maintained that his client had a fixed place of residence and that he would not escape the jurisdiction.

According to the defense attorney, his client had people who would appear as guarantors when bail was granted and they added that he would appear and be tried.

The prosecution’s chief inspector, Simon Terkpertey, said the plaintiff was a pharmacy assistant at Demens Pharmacy in the Dansoman exhibition roundabout. Alhassan and Yakubu resided in Sahara near Dansoman and Banana Inn, all in Accra, respectively.

On August 2 of this year, around 3:15 pm, the plaintiff was at the pharmacy when Alhassan entered the store apparently to buy an ointment.

Chief Inspector Terkpetey said the plaintiff then moved to remove the product from the shelf. Later, Alhassan threatened to shoot the author if he made any noise.

Alhassan then demanded the day’s sales and the whistleblower, who feared for his life, gave him an unspecified amount.

Alhassan also took the plaintiff to the manager’s office and searched the various drawers and took an unspecified amount.

The prosecution said that Alhassan, after obtaining the money, tried to escape with his unregistered motorcycle, but some witnesses stopped him.

Yakubu, who tried to remove Alhassan’s motorcycle, was also arrested. When Yakubu was searched, a number of suspected dried Indian hemp leaves and candies allegedly mixed with Indian hemp were recovered.

The Prosecutor’s Office said that the defendants in their respective statements admitted the crimes.
