Carles Tusquets, president of the board of directors currently in charge of Barcelona, has clarified his comments on the sale of Lionel Messi.
Earlier this week, Tusquets claimed it would have been better for Barcelona to have sold Messi when he asked to leave in the summer. Former president Josep Maria Bartomeu blocked any exit for the Argentine at that time.
Ronald Koeman didn’t seem particularly pleased with these comments from Tusquets when asked about them on Friday.
“The comments from outside the club do not interest me. But the comments from within the club do not help us to have the peace of mind we need,” said the Barcelona coach before facing Cádiz.
Tusquets, however, has moved to assure Koeman that, when speaking of Messi’s position at the Camp Nou, he was only speaking in financial terms.
“I did not say that I had sold Messi; I said that, economically, that he left would be good for the club,” Tusquets told Catalunya Radio.
“We would be better because we said that his salary is the highest in the world. Nothing could be more true. But I am nobody, the decision is yours and the board of directors cannot make those decisions.
“If necessary, I will tell Koeman that he misunderstood what I said. I was just doing the math.
“What Messi generates for the club compensates the cost [of his contract], but Barcelona does not depend on a single person “.
