Thomas Tuchel is no stranger to working with an expensive team, having been in charge of a Paris St-Germain team with players like Neymar (pictured) and Kylian Mbappé.
Thomas Tuchel will become Chelsea’s new manager after Frank Lampard was fired on Monday, and the club’s hierarchy is hoping the German is the man to unleash the potential of his most gifted talents.
Tuchel is one of the most complex coaching personalities in European football. The 47-year-old is known as a political power player and control freak, but also as a tactical visionary and methodical thinker. He was fired by Paris St-Germain in late December after months full of fights between him and sports director Leonardo.
While some in France claim that Tuchel never brought out the best in a star-studded squad, PSG still reached the Champions League final in August and won back-to-back national titles. His record was certainly good enough for the Chelsea board, which approached him shortly before Lampard’s removal.
Tuchel wasn’t sure at first whether he should take the mid-season job, but he has contemplated moving to the Premier League for quite some time, first entering into talks with Chelsea in 2017 after his departure from Borussia Dortmund.
Tuchel sees the job at Stamford Bridge as an opportunity to prove himself in England, just as Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola, two men he admires, have done before him.

Good communicator and full of ideas Tuchel couldn’t break Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga dominance, but he did lead Borussia Dortmund to the German Cup
Throughout his senior career, Tuchel has accumulated experience in a variety of settings. He started in tiny Mainz of the Bundesliga, moved on to the much more ambitious but financially limited Borussia Dortmund, and then took over from French champion PSG.
The Blues have an expensive roster after a generous summer outlay, but it seems unlikely that Tuchel will face the same resistance in the locker room as in Paris. Some of the Chelsea players complained about the lack of tactical instructions and general communication under Lampard. However, Tuchel is known to communicate extensively with his teams. If they let it.
The German will also not hesitate to implement some of his ideas, whether on the tactics board or elsewhere. At his previous clubs, he drew up diet plans, monitored players’ sleep patterns, reviewed the analytics department, changed exploration processes, and became involved in facility renovations.
Repeated crashes with the steering
His willingness to control practically everything in a club has made him enemies in the past.
During his time in Dortmund, he banned scout Sven Mislintat, who later worked for Arsenal, from training camp due to philosophical differences and demanded certain signings from CEO Hans-Joachim Watze and sporting director Michael Zorc.
“What matters are core values like trust and respect,” Watzke said after Tuchel left. “With Thomas Tuchel at the helm, Dortmund enjoyed two successful years in which our sporting goals were achieved. However, we did not always agree with the coaching staff during this period.”
Tuchel won’t have time to introduce substantial reforms at Chelsea in the coming weeks, but the summer could be the first test of the relationship between the German hierarchy and Chelsea. Whether owner Roman Abramovich, who is said to be a fan of Tuchel, and director Marina Granovskaia will be fond of their manager’s personality, it can only be subject to speculation at this point.
It worked well with Pulisic and Silva
However, it is understood that those at the top of the club believe that Tuchel will be able to do better with the current team than Lampard, who lost his job after a five-game losing streak in eight league games. The Blues spent £ 222 million on the transfer market last summer, but most of the signings have fallen short of expectations.
The highlight is that the two German attacking players Timo Werner and Kai Havertz have had more casualties than highs since arriving at Stamford Bridge.
As Chelsea have considered several German-speaking coaches in recent weeks, directly approached former RB Leipzig manager Ralf Rangnick and approached the team of current club manager Julian Nagelsmann, it seems that the Blues are hoping the German school of coaches Klopp spawned could revitalize the club.
Tuchel, having gone through the German coaching education system after he had to retire from playing at 25, could quite easily connect with Werner and Havertz and implement them into his system.
He also worked well with Christian Pulisic at Dortmund and Thiago Silva at PSG. In addition, he asked PSG management to make offers for both Jorginho and Antonio Rudiger during the previous transfer windows.
Players like Pulisic have already been reported happy with Tuchel’s arrival. While his personality may be off-putting to some boardroom executives at times, it has helped many players improve and take the next steps in their careers. “It’s a game of players. We as coaches only serve our players,” he once said.
Given the complaints about Lampard in recent weeks, this attitude could be just what this Chelsea team needs.
