The US Capitol was evacuated in the closing and inauguration rehearsal after a fire caused a security alert
President Donald Trump is “ desperate ” to gather more numbers for his farewell event, the CNN White House correspondent reported, as he faces his last full day at the White House.
Trump will host the farewell ceremony a few hours before President-elect Biden’s inauguration and is reportedly seeking a spike in numbers after a low level of confirmed attendees.
One of Trump’s final acts in the Oval Office has been to lift Covid travel restrictions in the UK, Ireland, the European Union, and Brazil. Biden’s team is expected to quickly reverse this decision.
It comes as President Trump is expected to issue a series of 100 pardons, with allies Paul Manafort and Rudy Giuliani proposed for clemency, as well as rapper Lil Wayne, The New York Times reported.
Meanwhile, in a final poll of Trump by CNN, the outgoing president has slumped to his lowest approval rating, 34 percent.
And the fallout from the Capitol riots continues when a woman accused of stealing a laptop from Nancy Pelosi’s office has been arrested by federal authorities.
What is Trump doing on his last day in office?
Since being banned from Twitter after the Capitol riots, President Trump has been relatively calm and little information has been released about what he will actually do on his last day as the most powerful politician on the planet.
A statement from the White House press office read: “President Trump will work from early morning until late at night. He will make many calls and have many meetings.”
Instead, the main focus of the day will likely be on the roughly 100 people Trump will pardon, the New York Times reports.
Various names have been speculated on, including whistleblower Edward Snowden, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, as well as Trump allies such as former adviser Steve Bannon and Paul Manafort.
