‘Truly extraordinary’ Haaland will get even better, says Nagelsmann

Erling Haaland added another two to his Bundesliga tally, which now stands at 25 goals, when Dortmund beat RB Leipzig.

Julian Nagelsmann supported Erling Haaland to improve further after his RB Leipzig team received a masterclass from the Borussia Dortmund forward.

Haaland scored twice and had a hand in another goal for Jadon Sancho when Dortmund beat Leipzig 3-1 on Saturday, and Nagelsmann’s side missed a chance to take top spot in the Bundesliga from Bayern Munich.

The double brought Haaland’s Bundesliga total to 25 goals in 25 games, only 20 of which have started. He has also scored an impressive 34.3 percent of his shots.

Saturday’s BVB opponents were also interested in Haaland when he left Salzburg and coach Nagelsmann acknowledged that his latest performance was proof of why he was so sought after.

He also pointed to Haaland’s talent in the Dortmund squad to explain why it is so difficult to deal with one of Europe’s most prominent stars.

“Erling we could have defended, but not if the players around him have too much room in a one-on-four situation,” Nagelsmann said.

“Of course he’s an exceptional striker, that’s why we wanted him too. Dortmund got it.

“I think he just scored 25 goals in 25 Bundesliga games, something like that. This is really extraordinary. Incredible statistics.”

Haaland had also scored two goals against Leipzig in the two teams’ meeting at the end of last season.

Nagelsmann added: “This is not the first goal he has scored against us. He has a serious quality and is very young.”

“So, I think I can’t judge him as well as our opponent, but he sure has some potential to develop. He will improve even more.

“And the league will be very happy with him. However, not with the opponents.”

With several clubs across Europe interested in Haaland, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke this week expressed his belief that the forward will stay for at least one more season.

Haaland is contracted to remain on Dortmund’s books until 2024, but it has been reported that a 75 million euro (£ 67 million / $ 92 million) release clause was included in that deal, which should be active in the summer of 2022.
