Trent Alexander-Arnold has echoed Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s sentiments when fighting on the Premier League calendar, as the defender insists that the well-being of the players must be considered.
The Premier League champions have been rocked by a series of injuries this season, with Alexander-Arnold joining Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henderson and Joe Gomez for being unavailable for Klopp.
Liverpool’s long injured list has led Klopp to criticize football authorities and broadcasters for setting a match schedule that, in his opinion, does not allow enough time for recovery.
And the 22-year-old full-back has supported his boss’s criticism, insisting that the players’ bodies are not well tuned to withstand the level of physical exertion that the current schedule puts them through.
“We get paid to play soccer so we can’t complain about having to play,” the defender told The Mirror. But we have to think about our bodies. It is not good to subject a human body to such intensity.
‘You look at the marathon runners, the people who do triathlons and the cyclists in the Tour de France. They train for so long to compete in such rapid succession.
‘You have to train for those kinds of distances, and our bodies are not trained to do that. We have 90 minute shots, we have to recover from that.
“But when they ask you to do that so quickly, it is not fair and the human body cannot cope with that.”
Alexander-Arnold’s comments come after Klopp dealt another blow to broadcasters this week, calling it a ‘crime’ that his team had to face Brighton today at 12:30 pm after facing Atalanta in the League. of Champions on Wednesday.
