Correspondence of the Volta Region:
Residents of Ho Township are currently in mourning following the sudden disappearance of former President Jerry John Rawlings.
Rawlings died at the age of 73 on Thursday, November 12 at the Accra-based Korle-Bu University Hospital, where he was admitted for about a week.
His death came just two weeks after he buried his mother, Victoria Agbotui.
Since then, reactions and tributes have been pouring in from Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians.
Residents of the Volta region, where Rawlings came from, also could not hide how much the news of her disappearance hit them.
Some residents of Ho Township who spoke to GhanaWeb said that Rawlings’ death will have a great effect on the region. For others, the former president is irreplaceable and his legacy does not change.
“Someone will say that an Iroko tree has fallen. His death has created a huge void in the Volta region, indeed throughout Ghana, one resident said.
For Courage Elikplim Agyei, he believes that the constant fight against corruption of the former president is a legacy that will last.
“… He was a leader who did not tolerate any form of corruption, he speaks with vigor, and what he wants to say he says without looking away. He won’t even sell his conscience for anything… ”, he revealed.
Another resident, Prosper Kwaku Toh, revealed to GhanaWeb that it was during Rawlings’ tenure that he had the opportunity to start wearing footwear.
He recalled that it was during his tenure as President of the Republic when he first saw the light in his town.
“It was because of Rawlings that some of us are looking at clothing and footwear today, in the past we had to queue for basic things like kerosene and bread.” he said.
Franklin Ashigbie, another resident, also said that “most of us consider him a role model, so his death caused us a lot of pain.”
“… One thing I like about him is the courage and charisma within him that he expresses every time he addresses a group of people,” she added.
