The Concerned Citizens of the Volta Region (CONCIVOR) are unhappy with the recent unrest by the secessionist group, Homeland Study Group Foundation, which is calling for a western Togo.

According to the citizens, the actions taken by the secessionists in their quest for the independence of western Togo are totally reprehensible.

In a statement, CONCIVOR supported the chiefs and other traditional authorities of the Volta region who have expressed their displeasure at the latest events.

Meanwhile, the President, Nana Akufo-Addo and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have been urged to take immediate action to remedy the situation and save Ghana’s democracy.

Below is the group’s full statement:

PRESS RELEASE FROM CONCERNED CITIZENS OF THE VOLTA REGION (CONCIVOR) ABOUT THE ATTACKS OF UNIDENTIFIED GROUPS AS OF 25TH SEPTEMBER 2020 AND LATER ATTACKS

Members of the Concerned Citizens of the Volta Region (CONCIVOR) have been following in recent days the unfortunate and very worrying developments in the Volta Region of the Republic of Ghana a few months before the general elections on December 7, 2020 and they wish to state unequivocally that we condemn in unequivocal terms the violent activities of an amorphous group, under the pretext of fighting for the independence of western Togo. The impression created is that western Togo, as it may have existed historically, encompasses the territory that is now known as the Volta region of Ghana.

From the first bold attack of this amorphous group in the early hours of the 25th September 2020 on the sovereignty of the Republic of Ghana and on the peace-loving people of the Volta region, in that regard, there have been swift and unreserved condemnations by the heads of the Volta region. Particular mention is made of the Regional House of Chiefs of Volta, which is the constitutionally designated umbrella body of all chiefs of the Region, the Awomefia of the State of Anlo, the Traditional Council of Battor, the State of Asogli, the Traditional Area of Gbi-Hohoe, the Alavanyo Traditional Area, the Peki Supreme Chief’s Office and many other groups and individuals, including security experts.

By this statement, we associate ourselves with the position of the heads of the Volta region and especially that of the House of Chiefs of the Volta Region expressed in a statement to the media, dated 27th September 2020 in which the traditional rulers not only condemned the attacks and underlined the peaceful nature of the peoples of the Region, but also called on the Government to carry out an independent and transparent investigation into the events of the 25th September 2020. We also partner with the House of Chiefs’ count of certain unfortunate comments and behaviors directed at the people of the Volta Region which, as they point out, are not only concerning but have negative consequences for the people of the Region.

Although the exact group responsible for these reprehensible and reprehensible violent acts in the Region and their exact motives is not yet clear, concerned citizens of the Region consider that the Government with all the security apparatus at its disposal can and must unravel the facts. . and discover the faces behind these acts and confront them with the whole arm of the law. The secondary effects of this localized problem can be dire for the entire Republic and could discredit its image as a beacon of democracy.

We also believe that in order to fully resolve the emerging problem that threatens the peace and security of Ghana, the Government must necessarily involve the chiefs and other traditional chiefs of the various communities where the problems are fostered. These commitments must be open, transparent and without unnecessary suspicion towards any of the parties.

We note that the group’s modus operandi, which so far has included hostage-taking, attacks on police stations, roadblocks, and delivering senseless destruction, such as burning of state property, raises serious questions about the true intentions of these groups.

Based on the foregoing, Concerned Citizens of the Volta Region are convinced that these groups, whoever they are or whoever they are, have an agenda completely contrary to people with true and good intentions for the Region. We therefore ask the Government to treat these people as criminals and consider that their actions are aimed at upsetting the peace and democratic order in Ghana and to treat them accordingly.

We hereby call upon ECOWAS, whose current head coincidentally is the President of the Republic of Ghana, the African Union and the United Nations to show great interest in the matter as an early warning sign and take action. suitable to avoid another scar on the face. of the world.

We also call on community watchdog committees to increase alertness in communities by sharing intelligence / information for action.

Long live the Volta region. Long live Ghana.
