Two people aboard a Daewoo Matiz Saloon car were killed instantly Friday night in Takoradi, western region, when a truck with a loaded container full of Cocoa fell on their car.

The accident happened at Vodafone [Kansuarina] highway in Takoradi.

The truck was carrying cocoa and was heading towards the port of Takoradi for export, but the container exited the truck and fell on the two occupants of the Daewoo Matiz on the road.

Western Regional Police MTTD Commander Chief Superintendent Richard Appiah confirmed the incident to Citi News said the fatal accident occurred after 9 p.m. on Friday, November 27, 2020.

“At 9:20 pm, the suspected driver, Eric Pamford Peters, 30, now deceased, was in a private Daewoo Matiz car with registration number WR 1049-19. He was driving from the Paa Grant roundabout to the Kwame Nkrumah roundabout with a 27-year-old Ama Amponsah, now deceased, on board. ”

“Upon reaching the Vodafone intersection, a Daf articulator with registration GT 5953-20 also in the opposite direction, driven by 32-year-old Adu Emmanuel Kweku with a 40-foot container loaded with cocoa drifted from its lane and climbed up the median to the Matiz lane. The container detached from the truck and fell on the Matiz crushing it. Those of Matiz were trapped in the car, but with the help of the Fire Service and the road safety recovery truck, they were removed and the bodies were deposited in the morgue of the Effia Nkwanta government hospital pending the autopsy, ”he said.

Chief Superintendent Richard Appiah said the vehicles have since been towed to the MTTD yard of the Regional Police in Sekondi pending evidence, and the suspected driver Emmanuel Kwaku was arrested and taken into police custody.
